How to Protect Your Hair from Sun Damage

Most people now take sensible precautions to protect their skin from strong sunlight, but many people don’t realise that harmful UVA and UVB rays can also damage their hair and scalp. Strong sunshine, excessive heat and fluctuating humidity levels can leave hair dry, brittle and weak. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your hair from sun damage.

Cover Up

The most effective way to protect your hair from sun damage is to wear a hat, baseball cap or other head covering. A wide-brimmed hat is often recommended for preventing sun damage to the skin on your face and neck, but it can also act as a filter to prevent harmful UV rays from damaging your hair.

Heat Protection Sprays

Heat protection sprays can help to reduce hair damage and frizz caused by strong sunlight. Most heat protection sprays contain properties that help to filter out UVA and UVB rays, acting as an invisible shield against the sun. Applying a heat protection spray to your hair will give you up to twelve hours of protection, depending on the brand and ingredients used in your spray.

Make Your Own Heat Protection Spray

You can make your own heat protection spray by adding one teaspoon of sun block to half a cup of water. Shake the mixture thoroughly to combine the ingredients, and then pour the solution into a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto your hair before going out into the sun, reapplying the protective spray throughout the day.

Hair Masks

Hair masks and deep conditioning treatments can help to restore moisture that has been lost due to sun exposure. When hair is exposed to strong sunlight and hot temperatures, it loses protein (keratin). Using a hair mask or conditioning treatment with added keratin can help to repair sun damage. The most effective way to protect your hair during the hot summer months is to cover your hair with some type of head covering. If you are unable to use a hat, scarf or similar item to cover your hair, try to stay in the shade as much as possible and use a heat protection spray or leave-in conditioner.
